Building Awareness and Capacity in Port Royal

Project Aims

  1. To develop and implement a basic course for training in tour guiding, Port Royal heritage, snorkel tours and emergency first response for fisherfolk/students/hotel workers in Port Royal- to facilitate them having a viable source of income.
  2. Conduct a Recreational Carrying Capacity Study to determine the best sustainable use of the ecological resources within the PPRPA.

Project Outcomes

  1. Participants in stakeholder groupings were sensitized on the importance of the conservation and sustainable use of the resources of the Palisadoes-Port Royal
  2. Protected Area through meetings and workshops held.
  3. Awareness material, specific to stakeholder grouping was developed.
  4. Thirteen (13 )workshops were held.
  5. A basic course content was developed for training in tour guiding, Port Royal heritage, snorkel tours and emergency first response. A total of 9 participants in the first cohort and 14 in the second cohort of training.
  • Ecology: 6 in Cohort 1; 5 in Cohort 2 
  • Skin diving: 5 in Cohort 1; 5 in Cohort 2
  • Heritage tours: 5 in Cohort 1; 5 in Cohort 2
  • Tour Guide:  5 in Cohort 1; 5 in Cohort 2
  • Entrepreneurship: 5 in Cohort 1; 3 in Cohort 2
  •  Advanced Open Water Dive Training: 10 individuals
